Nicolas Poussin (born June 1594, Les Andelys, Normandy [France]—died November 19, 1665, Rome, Papal States [Italy]) French painter and draftsman who founded the French Classical tradition. He spent virtually all of his working life in Rome, where he specialized in history paintings—depicting scenes from the Bible, ancient history, and mythology—that are notable for their narrative.

Poussin's composition is also inspired by the work of Renaissance artists, such as Bellini's The Feast of the Gods (National Gallery of Art, Washington) and Titian's The Andrians (Prado, Madrid). This painting was commissioned in 1636 by Cardinal de Richelieu (1585-1642), the powerful French minister, for his château in Poitou.
